Internal Medicine

An internist is a physician who specializes in the non-surgical treatment of adults. After graduating from medical school, three years of training is spent in the broad field of internal medicine. A physician practicing internal medicine is trained to treat chronic and acute diseases of the cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine and immune systems. In addition to these specialized areas, most internists do primary care medicine including routine physicals, gynecological examinations and treatment of colds, flu, allergies, etc.
